Exciting Day 1 at IBM Impact 2010

It has been an exciting first full day at IBM’s Impact 2010 conference in Las Vegas – with some 5,000 people attending this year. The opening General Session themed, “The Decade of Smart is upon us. What if you could change the world?”, featured many of IBM’s top WebSphere executives, a Harvard business school professor, customers, and funny man impersonator Frank Caliendo – not to mention some serious live rock and roll! I give IBM credit, as this session was easily the most energetic and entertaining conference opening I’ve seen in years, and that energy carried over to the many well-attended educational sessions.
But the highlight of the morning was easily Hubspan being awarded “Best of Show“. This prestigious award is accorded to only one of the many IBM business partners for the best use of WebSphere technologies in a solution. Hubspan won for its WebSpan SaaS Integration Platform - which incorporates key components of WebSphere integration software onto the Hubspan platform. The buzz of this award carried over to the Hubspan booth throughout the day.
A key theme around Impact 2010 is how enterprises are realizing that service oriented architecture (SOA), agile IT and cloud-based solutions are within their reach. I attended the more cloud-focused sessions, which were mostly geared around helping beginners understand what the cloud is, the value cloud-based solutions can bring, and what companies need to do to start weaving the cloud into their solution portfolio.
The exhibition hall was flooded with thousands of attendees today. In over-hearing many of the conversations on the floor, it was clear there is high interest in moving mission critical applications to the cloud. IBM’s announcement that it acquired Cast Iron probably fueled this fire. But in general, IT and business executives here seem to be more comfortable with the idea of moving parts of their IT infrastructure to the cloud or outsourcing the management of key IT services to cloud vendors.
Hubspan’s business integration platform definitely supports one of the major themes of the conference, business agility. A number of sessions stressed the importance of creating a more agile climate in order to adapt quickly and cost efficiently in response to meeting competitive demands. Another observation is the abundant number of international attendees at Impact. Their interest and level of discussion proves that Hubspan is well positioned to reach beyond any set of geographical borders.
