Survey Shows Most Companies Believe Data is Secure in Cloud

Hubspan today released results from a cloud security survey we conducted a couple of months ago, with the key outcome being most companies in the survey (84%) believe sensitive data can be secured in the cloud. This was higher than I expected.

Hubspan Cloud Security Survey shows most companies believe sensitive data can be secure in the cloud
What’s more, nearly half of the respondents also said they believe cloud-based solutions are as secure as on-premise products, with over 40% stating they would consider replacing current solutions with cloud-based ones.
However, respondents did show a bit of the anxiety I expected when asked what specific data they would put in the cloud.
Here, 75% said some data is still too sensitive to put in the cloud, particularly around intellectual property, employee records, and financial information. When asked whether security or performance was more important, a whopping 80% said they would sacrifice some cloud computing performance in order to ensure that the data was secure.
I think this is typical of most companies that in general believe in the promise cloud solutions can bring, but are finding it challenging to put their most business critical information to a place they believe is beyond their reach.
Compliance in the cloud was overwhelming ranked as “mission critical” to businesses across size and goegraphy, with Sarbanes Oxley, HIPAA and PCI DSS topping the list. The respondents also gave a clear message to cloud vendors, ranking their top cloud provider evaluation criteria, with data segregation, data protection and disaster recovery leading the list.
I am cautiously optimistic by these results, and it validates a lot of the work Hubspan is doing around compliance (PCI DSS, SAS 70 type 2, etc.), data protection and overall cloud security on our cloud platform. We have been ahead of the game, and we plan to continue to lead the market in the discussion and implementation of secure, cloud-based integration solutions.
