Cloud Security Test Makes Hubspan Techies Certifiable!

Posted by on November 17, 2010

The Cloud Security Alliance recently introduced a new, Web-based test for competency in CSA standards called the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK), for securing private, public or hybrid cloud environments.  The intent is to raise the baseline of knowledge on cloud security technologies and issues. And I’m happy to report that I (Stuart Lisk, Hubspan product management) and our Chief Software Architect, Max Coburn, are now both CCSK certified (well, some of our colleagues call us certifiable).

You might think this is just one more pay-for-play certificate to add to your wall. However, when you further examine what it takes to pass this certification, you quickly realize the CSA has ensured this is no cakewalk.

The certification test is based on the CSA’s document on security best practices, the “Security Guidance for Critical Areas of Focus in Cloud Computing, V2.1“.  In addition, the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) whitepaper “Cloud Computing: Benefits, Risks and Recommendations for Information Security” is an important component providing to the body of knowledge.

The CCSK is evidence that an individual has successfully completed an examination covering the key concepts of the CSA guidance and ENISA whitepaper.   These documents are 76 and 125 pages respectively and cover cloud security methodology, technology, challenges and best practices.

What I can tell you about this certification process is do NOT take it lightly. After studying for and receiving my CCSK, it is clear that CSA is taking this certification seriously. And so should you.  I know I feel proud of this accomplishment. It was one of the most difficult timed exams I have taken in a long time.

Those receiving the CCSK demonstrate commitment to understanding and delivering a secure cloud environment.  Companies need to encourage employees associated with implementing or delivering cloud solutions to study for and take the certification test.
