Survey Shows Cloud is Strategic for Most Companies
Posted by Margaret Dawson on October 7, 2010
We recently did a survey around cloud acceptance and implementations, and our results fell mostly in line with what we are hearing from industry analysts and experts. Companies of all sizes are moving to the cloud and consider cloud solutions “strategic”. More than 60% stated that moving to the cloud for applications, infrastructure, integration and other solutions is a strategic direction for their organization and department. And accordingly, they are implementing SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and other cloud-based solutions.
However, it’s also clear that a great deal of confusion remains. Just as we heard during a recent Webinar poll, a huge number of folks in this survey stated that a lack of understanding cloud benefits was the main barrier to moving to the cloud. Security was mentioned and was the top priority among respondents when asked about top priorities when considering cloud solutions, but far lower than not understanding the benefits.
Perhaps this is a case of information overlead, as there is so much being said about the cloud that it’s sometimes hard to break through the noise.
The reality is there are clear business and technical benefits of leveraging a cloud-based platform or solution, including no on-premise hardware or software, subscription-based “pay as you go” pricing, easy scalability and increased agility. But the greatest benefit still must be that the solution solves a business challenge. As an industry, we obviously need to do more to clearly explain the why and when the cloud makes sense for a business.

“Real Estate has nowhere to go but up.”
“I foresee a Dow 30,000.”
“All that matters is eyeballs on your website and not profitability of your company.”
The Cloud will probably burst in the same way. And Michael Lewis will be writing the story five year from now.
