Month in Review: July’s Top Cloud & Integration News
Posted by Hayden on August 3, 2011
During July, cloud computing continued to create hype and hope among IT and business audiences, while on the integration front, companies are starting to realize the need to think about integration as a critical part of the overall cloud ecosystem. This edition of the month in review looks at articles that address the questions: how can the cloud help our planet and just how important is integration?
Saving our planet with the cloud has become a common theme, and in fact, at the recent Green Data Center conference in Boston, this was a key theme throughout. Many organizations are motivated to move to the cloud, because of the belief it will reduce their carbon footprint and cut, thereby helping save millions of tons of carbon emissions and billions of dollars in utility bills – in addition to the lower physical footprint from not requiring any on-premise hardware. An article in Gigaom suggests the cloud could save billions of dollars, while Andrew Hickey also proclaims cost savings in his CRN article.
From saving costs to saving the world, the cloud is being used as a vital way to conduct better research. Multiple articles this month, based on an IBM press release, discussed how the company is working with Zurich’s Institute of Molecular Systems Biology and using cloud computing to enhance the study of destructive pathogens.
Here are our favorite articles on cloud computing this past month:
- Gigaom: “Cloud Computing Could Lead to Billions in Energy Savings” by Katie Fehrenbacher
- CRN: “Cloud Computing Chops Energy Costs, Carbon Emissions: Study” by Andrew R. Hickey
- Website Gear: “IBM and ETH Zurich Use Cloud Computing to Combat Increasingly Resistant Bacteria”
When it comes to integration, industry experts took this month to remind companies that integration should be a primary concern rather than a low priority afterthought when moving processes and data to the cloud. An article in IT Today claims integration is the missing link in the cloud and gives advice on how to approach the challenge. Forrester analyst Eve Maler took a similar theme by blogging on how companies are focusing on information access in the cloud and creating a borderless enterprise via a Web services layer. Adrian Grigoriu of eBiz took the need for integration to the next level by discussing how to decide whether a best-of-breed integration solution or a suite is best for your company.
Check out these leading integration articles:
- IT Today: “Integration: The Missing Link in the Cloud” by Margaret Dawson
- eBiz: “Enterprise Architecture Matters”by Adrian Grigoriu
- Forrester Blog: In Cloud-Friendly Web Services Security, “There Is No Enterprise.” Wait. What? By Eve Maler
Perhaps it was the hot July weather worldwide that made us pause and think more about how to harness the power of the cloud for the betterment of mother earth and our companies!
