The Cloud’s Top 4 New Year’s Resolutions
Posted by Stuart Lisk on January 7, 2011
Hi, my name is cloud. You know me by many monikers, including cloud computing, the Net, Web, as-a-Service (being called an “aaS” can be ok), etc. With the start of the new year, it’s a time for self-reflection, so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon of New Year’s resolutions and provide my own. After all, the analysts are all saying you are going to use me more than ever before in 2011, so I need to really evaluate my goals and think about how I can improve myself for you.
The Cloud’s New Year’s Resolutions:
Resolution #1: Stop making myself so complicated.
- I need to think of myself as one part of the ongoing computer evolution rather than something completely revolutionary. From the original mainframe that took up an airplane size hanger room full of equipment to the computer that sits in your handbag, I am one way people and companies can consume technology. I will be more confident in IT strategic planning meetings and position myself as a consumption model and not a new solution.
Resolution #2: Start helping IT professionals better understand my intrinsic value
- I will consistently communicate the value of “as a service” solutions built on me (the cloud). I won’t let people make up cloud benefits, but show clearly how I save costs, increase efficiencies and align IT and business. For Hubspan, I will effectively convey how implementing B2B integration in the cloud makes perfect sense, as it allows companies to extend existing infrastructure across the B2B cloud to business communities.
Resolution #3: Show how I am as secure as those on-premise models
- Get my followers and users to begin demonstrating how I can secure data both at rest and in transit, especially my friends over at the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and OWASP. Their studies show that I am as secure or even more secure than on-premise IT environments. I will also leverage cloud computing vendors such as Hubspan that are leading the way in cloud security to prove I am a compelling alternative.
Resolution #4: I will be easier to implement and connect to
- I’ll work with vendors to make it easier to implement me through self-service tools, and I will encourage vendors to create cool APIs and adapters for cloud-to-onpremise and cloud-to-cloud connectivity for easier on-ramping and connectivity.
As you set your New Year’s resolutions for 2011, why not make one of them to “play with the cloud more”. I’m really putting myself out there for you, so the least you could do is try me, especially since it’s so easy to start small and grow. Easy scalability is one of my strong suits – don’t need to make that a resolution, as I achieved that a couple years ago. I hope this year, you will let me help you by taking a ride in the clouds! You will be happy that you did.
